No More Plastic Baby Bottles

Plastics have revolutionized our society but not always for the better. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you no doubt are aware of the current backlash against plastic bottles. The main culprit is the chemical bisphenol A, which is in polycarbonate, and which, in turn, is used to make all sorts of things, including baby bottles and other beverage containers. THough the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has yet to ban bisphenol A, many consumer groups have urged manufacturers to stop using it, as there are indications the chemical can interfere with hormones and human development.
In March of 2009 six companies announced they would stop selling baby bottles that contain bisphenol A. Succumbing to pressure from consumer groups as well as several state attorneys general, the following manufacturers said they will not market the bottles in the United States: Playtex Products, Gerber, Evenflo, Avent America, Disney First Years, and Dr. Brown. Consumer groups hope this is a first step, and that other products and manufacturers follow.
