When researching hospice facilities, the term palliative care is something that you may also see a lot. While these are different types of services, they are not mutually exclusive. In the list below, you will see several facilities that offer both types of care. According to a program from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, there are a few distinctions when considering the difference between palliative and hospice care.
Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for anyone living with a serious illness. It can be used in inpatient hospital, outpatient, or home settings. Qualifying situations may include surgery, chemotherapy, dialysis, or while the patient receives other curative or therapeutic services. Palliative care can include pain management, other medical services, case management, and community linkage services. A majority of hospice patients are likely receiving palliative care, but most palliative care patients may not be receiving hospice services. Unlike hospice services, there is no timeframe provided for these services. A patient may engage in these services for as long as necessary.
Many people also know hospice care as end-of-life care. It focuses on quality of life when curative treatment is not possible, the burdens of treatment outweigh recovery, and the treating physician expects a lifespan of less than six months. It is a mistaken understanding that this means you may only spend six months in hospice treatment. All conditions progress in their own time, so some may survive beyond six months. If there is no significant change in condition, and the physician believes life expectancy is still likely less than six more months, hospice care may be extended. In hospice care, you do not receive curative treatment for the illness, but you will receive medications to increase your quality of life, such as those for anxiety or blood pressure.
A care team of different professionals provides hospice services, though they are primarily staffed by physician and nursing services. The Oregon Health Authority oversees licensing requirements for healthcare facilities and providers in Oregon, including hospice facilities. Each facility must follow Oregon guidelines in addition to federal guidelines. One such guideline is the notice of patient rights that requires each patient to be notified verbally and in writing of their rights, which consist of the following:
Additionally, all patients have the right to be free of mistreatment and abuse. This includes any injuries from an unknown source and misappropriation of patient property.
