100 People Pileup | Oregon Auto Accident Lawyer
A pileup involving more than 20 vehicles, many of them big rigs, Saturday on Interstate 84 left at least a dozen people injured. The crash happened just before five in the morning, according to state transportation officials. Although roughly 100 people were involved in the pileup, everyone made it out alive and only about a dozen were injured.
Injuries ranged from minor to critical. Most of the injured were immediately transported to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center. Some later were taken to Portland’s OHSU Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
Saturday morning’s driving conditions were extremely hazardous, with icy roads, thick fog, and high winds. The pileup involved not just one crash, but a series of crashes that spanned nearly a third of a mile. Oregon police officials reported that while about 20 vehicles were directly involved, another 50 or possibly more may have been indirectly affected. Many of the vehicles involved in the collision were semi-trucks, some carrying hazardous materials.
Officials are still investigating the crash and likely will be for some time. No doubt the adverse weather conditions contributed to the pileup, but other factors could have been at play. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this horrific crash.
