Toy Safety — May Day
Happy May Day!
Many children drop flowers on their neighbor’s doorsteps on May Day. Parents usually go with or watch their children to keep them safe. As parents we often forget dangers may be in our own homes. We bring toys into the home assuming they must be safe because the toys are on the market. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Many toys are on the market that are unsafe and have not been tested.
Some toy facts:
- A child dies every month from a toy caused injury…….38 in last two years
Consumer Product Safety Commission - 118,300 children under 14 years old were treated in the ER’s ……60% were under 4 years old
- 63% of deaths relate to swallowing and choking
- Riding toys relate the highest rate of injuries
Be careful when purchasing a new toy. Use common sense. If it is too sharp, do not buy it. If it gets too hot, do not buy it. If it is too loud, do not buy it. You need to be proactive when purchasing toys for your children to help prevent injuries.
