It’s summer, which means more foodborne illnesses! Unfortunately,
cheese lovers recently took a hit, as the Crave Brothers line of cheeses
were part of a voluntary recall issued by Whole Foods Markets. The cheeses,
including les freres, have been associated with a listeria outbreak that
has resulted in one death and sickened a small handful of people.
The cheeses were made by Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese in Wisconsin and
were sold in dozens of states where Whole Foods has stores. The Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) reported that there have been confirmed cases
in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The death occurred in Minnesota.
One miscarriage has even been attributed to the tainted cheese.
The listeria bacteria can cause the illness listeriosis. Symptoms include
diarrhea, fever, and muscle aches. Those with compromised immune systems,
as well as the young and the elderly, are at the most risk.
